Has anyone seen The Wind Rises? I kind of want to discuss whether it was about the development of not only the aeroplane but the sudden boom of Japanese engineering and technological advancement during pre-WWII as they were trying to catch up with Germany or just some sort of weird pro-war film about those who built fighter jets / war machines / bombers. I mean, either way I still have a new-found respect for Japanese engineers of the time and aeroplanes themselves.
not sure if you’re still wanting to discuss it but i love that movie and could talk about it and japan pre-, during, and post- WWII for ages~
a lot of it seemed to me about channelling your creativity into something that you might not agree with.think about it: we know throughout the movie that he wants to create his best work. even if that meant that he had to create something dangerous, and we see him struggle with that throughout the movie. i know that the movie and the manga are both based off of the real inventor of the kamikaze fighter jets, but i haven’t read the manga, nor do i know much about the real jiro horikoshi. i think the movie was trying to show us the man behind the kamikaze planes, but that’s just my (sort of obvious) interpretation of the movie.
i personally loved the movie, and thought that it was the perfect way for miyazaki to end his career — it truly was everything he ever loved put into one gorgeous movie.
